Shennecossett is a word used by the Pequot Tribe meaning “Level Land” according to “Indian Place Names of New England,” compiled by John C. Hudson, National Museum of the American Indian. The golf course is located in Groton which occupies land that was the ancestral home of the Pequot and Mohegan Tribes.
Founded in 1898, Shennecosset Golf Course is one of Connecticut’s oldest and most iconic golf courses, offering a scenic and challenging experience for golfers of all abilities. Originally starting as a modest four-hole layout, the course grew over the years, eventually expanding to nine and then eighteen holes. In 1916, famed golf course architect Donald Ross—one of the most celebrated designers in golf history—was tasked with redesigning the course, bringing it to its current layout. Ross returned in 1919 to reroute three holes, perfecting his design. Today, Shennecosset remains one of the five Donald Ross-designed courses in Connecticut.
The course offers spectacular views, especially from the 16th and 17th holes, where golfers can enjoy sweeping vistas of the Thames River and Long Island Sound. On any given day, players might also spot the U.S.C.G.C. Eagle or even a nuclear submarine navigating the waterways—a testament to the course’s unique location.
In 1997, a land swap with Pfizer enabled Shennecosset to build three additional holes overlooking the water, enhancing its already stunning layout. Since its purchase by the Town of Groton in 1969, Shennecosset has been open to the public, making it the only public Donald Ross-designed course in the state.
Over the years, Shennecosset has welcomed numerous golf legends, including Arnold Palmer, Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, and Francis Ouimet, among many others. The course continues to host premier events like the Connecticut Senior Open and has earned recognition as one of the top public courses in the region. In 2007, Golf Magazine named Shennecosset one of its “Thrifty Fifty”—a list of the best public access courses in the United States that can be played for under $50.
Today, Shennecosset stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of its historic design, offering golfers both a challenging round and a beautiful connection to the past. As part of Groton Parks & Recreation, the course remains a vital and cherished part of the community.

In the early 20th century, the Griswold Hotel was the social heart of the Shennecosset Golf Course experience. Situated just a short distance from the course, the hotel welcomed golfers, tourists, and locals, offering luxurious accommodations and a gathering place for those enjoying the beautiful setting of Shennecosset. With its elegant atmosphere and prime location, the Griswold Hotel was an integral part of the Shennecosset legacy, providing a memorable retreat for golfers during the golden age of the course. Though the hotel is no longer standing, its connection to Shennecosset continues to be a cherished part of the course’s history.
